Every practical physician has seen consumption breaking out and ending fatally in persons who have never come in contact with phthisical sufferers, and whose hygienic surroundings had been all that could be desired--and this would rather favour the views of Laennec. Still, we believe that there is truth in the author's theory, and that it will, if pursued, yield good results. Much of his theory is purely inferential; but it accounts for the undoubted communicability of consumption under certain circumstances, the comparative impunity of persons engaged in certain trades, the protective influence of good air, and the beneficial results of sea voyages to certain localities. We respectfully recommend the author to pursue this inquiry and produce a work on the etiology, pathology, and therapeutics of pulmonary phthisis, which will rank with those treatises on Constitutional Syphilis and other branohes of medicine which have reflected such credit on the medical press of Australia, pterarg Jfrrtes anb Gossip. New medical journals are continually springing up in the United States. The latest candidate for favour now before us is the Independent Practitioner, published at Baltimore. This journal, if it continue as it has begun, should be able to hold its own, as it contains good matter, is well edited, and excellently printed. On the principle of " the more the merrier," we wish our new friend all success.
